Apprenticeships and the Supply Chain

Recent statistics show that in just over a year more than 40,000 new apprenticeships have been created in the capital, double from last year, making London the fastest growing region for new apprenticeships. London Council’s have created more than 2,000 of these since 2009, positioning them six months ahead of their target.

So, how are they doing this?
Each year local authorities spend a large amount of money on works, goods and services, which are essential to the delivery of services for the community. In procuring and commissioning such works, goods and services, local authorities are increasingly using the opportunity to implement a range of initiatives that can provide local skills training, apprenticeships and employment opportunities.

If London Boroughs make preferences in choosing  suppliers who show commitment to training young people, then these suppliers  who take on an apprentice have more chance of winning that all important contract.

With youth unemployment hitting the one million mark now more than ever, we need to ensure we have a consistent message promoting apprenticeships, the Councils have made a start, but there are many other public sector employers who can utilise the procurement route in order to promote skills training and employment opportunities -the NHS for example!

We all have a responsibility to our Young People, we need to ensure that supply chains provide real opportunities for the next generation.
