JULIE AND MARIA

Julie Wortley and Maria Defoe are experienced Caregivers. Whilst very keen to complete their QCF modules both learners were reluctant to take the English, Maths and IT element of their Apprenticeship.

Julie felt that she did not need it for her job role and, having rarely ever used a computer, was particularly concerned about the IT exam; Maria, as a non-native English speaker, was concerned that she would struggle with English and regularly expressed this concern to her Assessor.

Prevista’s Assessor Karema Weekes worked with Maria and Julie to overcome their barriers and fears. Karema recalls:

“Both ladies required extra support to bring them fully on board. As they are both experienced members of the team and often relied upon by colleagues to do extra duties it was important this support did not get in the way of their day-to-day role. I agreed with them and their manager that they would attend Prevista offices outside of working hours to get additional support with their English, Maths and IT”.

Attending our offices gave Maria and Julie the opportunity to receive additional intensive one to one support. Karema helped build up Maria’s confidence that she had the ability to pass the exams and worked closely with her on her English and Maths. Julie received additional support through IT workshops led by our Head of Skills, Karly Lattimore.

Through Prevista’s bespoke support Maria and Julie overcame their fears to pass their exams and complete their Apprenticeship. Julie has become a regular internet user which has had a dramatically positive impact on all aspects of her life.
