SHY SOAP

When Saida Hammoudan lost her job she decided to look into the idea of turning her hobby of soap making into a business. She discussed the idea with her Jobcentre Plus Adviser who then referred her to Prevista’s New Enterprise Allowance programme.

Prevista’s Business Adviser, Nadine Bokhoory, provided Saida with intensive one-to-one advice and support to help make her idea a reality. Saida’s key barrier was her lack of awareness of statutory and regulatory requirements. Nadine advised Saida about a wealth of topics including taxation, employment law, business registration and structure. Nadine recalls:

“Saida had bags of enthusiasm and a great idea of producing bespoke soaps that people could buy for themselves, family members or friends. However, she was unsure about the regulatory side of things. This is a common barrier for NEA clients. I was able to allay her concerns by providing her with face-to-face, email and telephone support, which enabled her to complete her business plan and start up her business”.

The website is now up and running and Saida is offering a range of natural and personalised soaps at competitive prices. Buoyed by excellent early sales figures and numerous clients returning with repeat orders, Saida has now branched out to sell further items including vitamins and supplements.

Saida explains that without Nadine’s initial support she would not be where she is today:

“I am immensely grateful to Prevista for the advice I received in the early days. I knew I had a great product and could make a living from it but I just needed the peace of mind that I was doing everything by the book. I now have a website as well as a shop unit and early sales have far exceeded my expectations. I am looking forward to developing new lines and products as the business expands”.
