SOPHIE

Prevista learner Sophie works for Sharon Kindergarten in Finchley and wanted to gain a qualification in childcare. To support her progress at work, Sophie was encouraged to complete an Apprenticeship with Prevista in Maths Level 1 Functional Skills.

When she began her Apprenticeship Sophie had a number of barriers to overcome including severe dyslexia, a lack of self-confidence and motivation. However with the support of Prevista’s tailored programme of support, which we have embedded into the delivery of her qualification, Sophie was able to make swift progress. Prevista’s Functional Skills Tutor, Andrea-Mae Mclean worked with Sophie and her employer to identify the specific barriers regarding her dyslexia and then co-designed a suitable and flexible programme of support to address these. By providing 1:1 intensive support and offering flexible provision over weekends and evenings, Andrea saw Sophie make quick progress. Through completing a series of exercises and working with Sophie to analyse and break down the questions on her qualification assessments, Sophie demonstrated real progress very quickly and not only gained the ability to improve on her functional skills work, but her confidence soared too.

Sophie passed her exam and is now very keen to explore opportunities to move to the next level and gain an enhanced position at Sharon Kindergarten.
