JANINE EDGCOMBE

Janine had been suffering from a prolonged period of ill health. She wanted to work but her illness and length of time out of work meant that she wasn’t confident in her abilities and didn’t know what type of work would suit her current circumstances.

After discussing her situation with her Jobcentre Plus Work Coach she was told about Prevista’s Mental Wellbeing programme for unemployed people with mild to moderate mental health issues and how it could help her. The programme offers a wide range of support for those with long term mental health issues including confidence building, discovering your skills and abilities, CV writing, job applications and a wide range of interview techniques.

The main thing about the programme that really interested Janine was the opportunity to experience a work placement where she could develop real work skills that would enable her to gain confidence and find a job.

Janine was found a two week placement with the Essex Care Consortium where she worked in a residential home and supported young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. She loved the work, helping young people to accomplish the everyday tasks that most people take for granted such as dressing and making breakfast. She found the work extremely satisfying and after her two week placements, she was offered a full time job.

Without the support she received from Prevista, Janine feels that she would still be stuck at home not working and living on benefits. She loves having a job and earning a wage. She says:

“All the staff who supported me were very helpful. Without their support and the Wellbeing programme I would never be working and doing a job that I love.”
