By providing bespoke one-to-one support we were able to establish the root causes of disengagement and tailor provision to meet her needs.

Rebecca’s Assessor Karema Weekes recalls:

“At her initial induction I immediately felt there was something wrong, something she was keeping from me. Whilst she was clear that she ultimately aimed to go to nursing college she was not focussed and did not seem to buy in to the idea of a long term commitment to an Apprenticeship”.

Following regular email, telephone and face to face contact it became apparent that Rebecca’s younger brother was on the list for a kidney transplant and was often very ill. She had to take regular periods off work to look after her sibling and to support her mother. Whilst this was a very trying experience for Rebecca and her family, it was also an opportunity to make her apprenticeship more meaningful. Karema explains:

“I guided her towards optional units that she could relate to as a result of her experience of supporting her young brother, for example ‘use of medication in social care setting’ and ‘infection control’”

The change was immediate, she became a lot more engaged and visited Prevista’s offices at evenings at weekends to fully get to grips with our OneFile e-portfolio system. We also put the Nomad app onto her smartphone so she was able to easily access her portfolio, upload evidence and clearly see her progression.

Rebecca successfully completed her Apprenticeship ahead of time and Prevista are now supporting her to find suitable Nursing Colleges to help her pursue her dream of becoming a fully qualified Nurse.
